Let's start with some core herbs I think all beginners need:
Chamomile - (Matricaria recutita) anxiolytic, sedative, carminative, anti-inflammatory, vulnerary
Peppermint - (Mentha piperita) antispasmodic, analgesic, decongestant, anti-nausea, antimicrobial

I want to pause here for the core medicinal herbs (aerial parts) in an effort to not overwhelm you all. I will be including the metaphysical uses to all herbs listed. I have listed the actions of each herb as well as their scientific name for you to start learning those, too. I hope that helps :)

Expectorants: Assist in clearing mucus from the respiratory tract
Nervines: Support, calm, or stimulate the nervous system
Tonics: Strengthen and nourish specific organs or systems
Vulneraries: Promote wound healing
Keep in mind, these are just COMMON actions of herbs, and it is not a complete list.
Now to the roots that I think are important for the beginner:

Valerian Root- (Valeriana Officinalis) sedative, anxiolytic, nervine, antispasmodic, hypnotic
Licorice- (Glycyrrhiza glabra) demulcent, expectorant, adrenal tonic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral
